RESPONSIBILITIES

The Radiological, Mechanical, and Subsurface Systems Department is seeking early to mid-career candidates to enhance its systems design and integration capabilities for bioenergy, advanced manufacturing, and robotics work. This position will support INLs Bioenergy, Advanced Manufacturing, and Radiological Sealed Source Recovery programs. The candidate must have strong computer aided drafting/design (CAD) and electro/mechanical systems analysis skills. You must have a foundational education in engineering principles related to the motion and dynamics of heat, gas, air, fluids, and solid materials systems required to design machines whose parts and assemblies function in a safe and reliable, efficient and predictable manner. You must be able to perform basic calculations to analyze and evaluate the location, material properties, and mechanical design of prototype research equipment and systems. This may include application of engineering principles to design, monitor, and evaluate conditions and operational performance of systems related to mechanical engineering, recommend maintenance and repair standards and procedures, identify vendor data, replacement and spare parts, coordinate resources and priorities necessary to attain or maintain the appropriate system condition. You must have good written and verbal communication skills, a publication record is desired. You will work in a team environment. This position must be or become familiar with, and comply with all relevant health and safety requirements, emergency action policies and procedures, methods for reporting/resolving work practices or conditions to available cognizant professionals and perform all work in an environmentally safe and compliant manner. This position may involve some work outside normal office hours.

The position will require you to:
Apply sound engineering principles to develop and deliver specific system models and designs based on research and development objectives and deliverables including design documents and written procedures for developed systems and processes
Lead mechanical activities associated with setting up, reconfiguring, maintaining, and operating large scale grinding, milling, and densification related equipment, including hoisting and rigging, critical lift evaluation, procurement, conducting briefings, and execution of work in a safe manner
Independently obtain and collect data from research experiments and hardware assemblies and components
Perform technical evaluation of data related to the operation and testing of electro/mechanical systems
Contribute to the development of program plans, identify concepts for new business and assist in their development
Extract and compile technical data and documentation as required and contribute to technical reports, publications, and presentations at national technical meetings and project reviews with program sponsors
Support management and work program leadership in meeting DOE/industry expectations, milestones and deliverables, and INL internal reporting metrics
Interface and develop relations with other labs and industry related to current work scope

BS and 4 years of relevant experience, MS and 2 years of relevant experience, or a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or equivalent disciplines.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS AND/OR TRAINING:
The preferred candidate must work well in a team environment and is expected to be a team contributor. The position involves occasional travel and some work outside normal office hours.
The preferred candidate will have:
Demonstrated experience with computer aided drafting/design (CAD) and machine programming
Demonstrated experience with the operation and maintenance of equipment and typical hand tools
Demonstrated abilities to follow written procedures, guidelines, and rules as well as documenting work that has been performed
Good written and verbal communication skills


SELECTIVE SERVICE REQUIREMENTS
