RESPONSIBILITIES

The INL Radiological, Mechanical, and Subsurface Systems Department has a need for a research and development technician to perform multiple tasks in a sophisticated research and development work environment. You will fabricate, assemble, calibrate, adjust, and test prototype or one-of-a-kind electronic, electro/mechanical, mechanical and/or optical devices, instruments, systems or processes. You will set up and operate test equipment to evaluate the performance of prototypical devices, including robotic or remote handling systems, analyze test data, and recommend changes or modifications to improve performance. You will install, troubleshoot, and maintain new equipment. You will compile and complete documentation of development and/or test processes and may participate in equipment and/or test design. You will function as mechanical design, electronics, remote robotic systems, remote handling systems, and process development support within INL's Radiological, Mechanical, and Subsurface Systems Department. You will apply mechanical and electronics principles along with knowledge gained through education and training, to perform work responsibilities. You will work with and support research scientists and engineers working in multiple program and in multiple facilities. You may specifically support INLs Bioenergy Program, Radiological Source Recovery Program, and Advanced Manufacturing program. You will participate in and individually promote effective multidisciplinary teams across technical disciplines and support functions as appropriate to enable the successful delivery of research products and technology within specific research scope, schedules, and budgets. Specific tasks may include, but are not limited to, materials handling and testing, electronics, mechanical systems design, cable management, equipment installation and maintenance, and duties associated with operating research facilities and equipment that scale from bench to full production.

This position will require outdoor work and extended working hours in all seasons and weather conditions and possibly in locations around the United States. It will involve physical labor as well as operation of heavy equipment and machinery including forklifts. The work involves hazards that require mitigation including protective clothing, gloves, eye wear, hearing protection, and possibly respirators. This position requires exceptional interpersonal and organizational communication skills with an understanding of how to interface with managers and colleagues. You must maintain good team relationships and moral. Work is performed at a level that actions may have visibility at the Department and research program level. This position may require some travel and a security clearance.

High School Diploma and a minimum of 2-4 years relevant experience or equivalent training is required

Special Requirements and/or Training:
Have or have the ability to obtain a DOE security clearance.
Demonstrated skills in advanced electro/mechanical design, welding technology, remote systems, team organization and scheduling, and laboratory off-site work operations.
Six years of mechanical design, mechanical hands-on, and welding experience applicable to applied R&D and operations.
Skills in oral and written communication and applying team building concepts.
Excellent communication skills, personable, detailed oriented, and experience in interfacing with management and technical personnel at all levels.

SELECTIVE SERVICE REQUIREMENTS
