Responsibilities The Computational Mechanics and Materials Department at Idaho National Laboratory develops next-generation software for simulating the response of nuclear fuel and reactor materials to harsh environments. The Grizzly (https://moose.inl.gov/grizzly), Bison (https://bison.inl.gov) and Marmot codes (https://moose.inl.gov/marmot) are examples of this software, all of which are multi-physics codes based on the open-source MOOSE finite element framework (https://mooseframework.inl.gov).Marmot is a phase field code that simulates the coevolution of microstructure and material properties of nuclear fuels and claddings due to stress, temperature, and irradiation damage, to supply microstructure-based materials models to engineering scale codes such as Bison and Grizzly. Marmot is based on the phase-field module in the MOOSE framework. Marmot takes inputs from atomic scale calculations and simulations for fundamental materials parameters and mechanisms that govern materials responses to extreme conditions. The phenomena of interest include grain growth, deformation and phase transformation, mass and heat transport, radiation damage, fission gas swelling and release, etc.Due to past accomplishments and program growth, the Department seeks a Computational Materials Scientist Postdoctoral Research Associate dedicated to mesoscale modeling and simulation of nuclear fuels and materials. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing models, methods, and verification/validation strategies to support the development of the MOOSE phase-field module and MARMOT. The successful candidate will work closely with experimentalists for validations of models and results.Expectations include: Demonstrated skills in computational materials science (microstructural evolution) and/or computational mechanics (e.g., fracture and plasticity), and/or uncertainty quantification and propagation Demonstrated experience in one or more atomistic or mesoscale modeling methods, including but not limited to density functional theory, molecular dynamics, phase field, cluster dynamics, dislocation dynamics, plasticity, etc. Preferably have experience in software engineering and software quality practices.
