Idaho National Laboratory's (INL) is seeking forward-thinking, professionals interested in exploring a career as a Fire Protection Engineer (FPE)!

The FPE will have a complete understanding and wide application of principles, theories and concepts in the field of fire protection (FP). Thorough knowledge of, but not limited to, NFPA, DOE, IBC, IFC standards, orders, and regulations. Representative assignments include but are not limited to independent development of Fire Hazard Assessments (FHA) for nuclear facilities, provide mentoring to junior staff, provide peer reviews FHAs and FSAs, developing combustible loading programs for nuclear facilities, and reviewing work control documents that require advanced Fire Protection solutions. Works under general direction and can lead projects with regards to fire protection support on research/laboratory projects that are broad in nature and not well defined. Actions will be taken by this individual to proactively keep abreast of new developments in Fire Protection and maintain their skill level. Seek to continue developing fire protection engineering skills and maintain relationships of trust with customers and co-workers. Further descriptions of principle job duties are established in LRD-14002 "Safety, Fire Protection, and Industrial Hygiene Functions, Roles, Responsibilities, and Interfaces." General knowledge of other related fields. Resolves a wide range of issues in creative ways. Fully qualified, career oriented. 'Works on problems of diverse scope. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Solutions are imaginative, thorough, practical, and consistent with organizational objectives. Independently determines and develops approach to solutions. Work is reviewed upon completion for adequacy in meeting objectives. Contributes to completion of specific programs and projects.

Failure to acquire results or erroneous decisions or recommendations would typically result in program delays. Frequent internal organizational customer contacts. May have some outside contact or represent organization in providing solutions to difficult issues associated with specific projects or work.

Responsibilities Include:

Accountability to:

  • The Occupational Safety and Health Director.
  • The ES&H manager/lead in the fulfilment of the responsibilities outlined above.
  • The assigned customer to provide a timely and quality service.
  • The FP program lead in the development of the FP program and reporting on DOE commitments.
  • The fire marshal in support of AHJ responsibilities and DOE commitments.
  • Peers and junior staff to support and mentor.
  • Support Voluntary Protection Program and Integrated Safety Management.
  • Take actions to ensure safe, secure, and environmental compliance throughout operations and spaces, and to maintain activities within the approved safety envelope.
  • Stop work on any activity or operation when continued operations deems unsafe or results in an environmental concern.
  • Provide feedback on performance evaluations.
  • Figure out and develops approaches to solutions.

    Minimum Requirements:

    • Level 3 - BS in engineering, 5 years FPE experience - Master's Degree and 3 years' FPE experience - PhD and 2 years' FPE experience.
    • Level 4 - Bachelors in engineering and 8 years FPE experience -Master's Degree and 4 years FPE experience - PhD and 6 years FPE experience.
    • US Citizen.
    • Capable of acquiring and maintaining a DOE L security clearance.
    • Must meet minimum qualifications in DOE-STD-1066-2012 for a FPE
    • Maintain Fire Protection qualifications.
