Idaho National Laboratory's (INL) Characterization Systems & Service group is seeking forward-thinking, professionals interested in exploring a technical career as an Image Processing Engineer/Scientist! INL excels at development and characterization of materials that support multiple types of advanced energy research including energy-generation, storage, transmission and security. Currently the Materials Science and Engineering Department at INL is seeking an engineer or scientist with experience in image processing and enhancement. The major focus of the position is to acquire image data, process and analyze images, and develop enhancement algorithms using both laboratory R&D imaging systems and field imaging systems. This includes facilitating and performing research using X-ray digital radiography and computed tomography systems with other researchers. In addition, the position offers the opportunity to work as a member of an interdisciplinary team that designs, builds, and optimizes portable X-ray imaging systems. This team member will be expected to plan and carry out R&D under the direction of senior INL research staff. They will help prepare reports and manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals as well as make presentations. The individual will also provide input to research proposals stemming from their work. Performing routine X-ray system maintenance and coordinating service visits from vendors is also a duty. Responsibilities Include:

  • Be an active contributor within a team of engineers and scientists who perform the design, development, testing, and deployment of field portable X-ray imaging systems.
  • Work with staff researchers to investigate material properties using novel imaging, image processing, and image analysis techniques.
  • Take an interdisciplinary approach to image processing algorithm development that results in optimal image enhancement and quantification of material properties.
  • Work with new equipment from installation through troubleshooting, calibration, and maintenance while developing standard operating procedures and communicating with equipment suppliers to address needs and problems.
  • Conducting and documenting work at an appropriate quality level, collecting and interpreting laboratory data, planning research tasks, assessing and applying a wide range of research techniques to those tasks. Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Optical, Mechanical, Electrical, Nuclear, Instrumentation and Controls), Physics, Mathematics, or related field.
  • Experience using VGStudio Max or utilizing machine learning algorithms for image processing.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Q-Level Clearance Preferred Requirements:
    • Experience writing and utilizing software such as LabVIEW, MATLAB, and Python for image processing and analysis
    • Experience utilizing modeling software such as PENELOPE, MCNP, or GEANT4.
    • Candidates with image processing and image analysis experience but no X-ray imaging experience are encouraged to apply. Job Information
