WORK LOCATION: Idaho Falls, ID (MFC Site 4x10s schedule) Help support our National Security Mission and discover why we attract the best minds in the world! The Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking applicants for an Experienced Mechanical (HVAC) Engineer reporting to the Facilities and System Engineering Department Manager. INL is recognized as the lead national laboratory for DOE-NE, providing much of the nuclear research, development, and demonstration capability needed to move nuclear innovation forward to deployment. MFC hosts a unique combination of personnel, facilities and infrastructure and offers the ability to perform research and development of nuclear fuels from fuel design, development and fabrication through post irradiated analysis. The HVAC Engineer applies engineering knowledge, practice and techniques to solve applied and operational problems in facility HVAC systems (including glove boxes and fume hoods), and in the areas of R&D for Nuclear Programs, National and Homeland Security, and Energy and Environment. The Candidate must be able to apply sound knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and practices in a broad array of assignments. He or she will perform mechanical design of HVAC equipment and systems, assist in developing and reviewing potential HVAC projects, and provide engineering support during HVAC project implementation. The experienced engineer will work closely with other engineers and team members to complete work assignments. Responsibilities Include:

  • Perform System Engineering role for modifications to assigned existing HVAC systems and development of new system capabilities
  • Perform Design Engineer role for modifications
  • Configuration Management
  • Equipment Maintenance (predictive and preventative)
  • Monitor Performance
  • Failure Analysis
  • Operations Support Minimum Requirements:
    • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineeringyears'-8 year's experience or Master of Degree in Mechanical Engineering and 3-5 years' of experience.
    • Must be a US Citizen and have the ability and willingness to obtain and maintain a DOE "L" Clearance.
    • Sound experience with the design and maintenance of heating ventilation and air conditioning systems for commercial and industrial applications.
    • Knowledge of building automation and controls systems.
    • Working knowledge of ASHRAE Fundamentals including, fan and duct sizing, system balancing and static pressure calculations.
    • Experience with operation of variable frequency drives
    • Basic understanding of DOE STD 3020, ASME N511 and ASME AG-1 codes (understand the progression from ASME N509 and N510 to AN511 and AG-1) Required Skills
      • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
      • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with accurate attention to detail.
      • Working knowledge of HVAC systems including, high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter selection, sizing and aerosol testing and filter housing design and selection.
      • Experience working with potentially radioactive contaminated facility and containment (glove boxes and fume hoods)exhaust systems.
      • Experience with duct sizing and layout
      • In-depth understanding of applicable ASHRAE, SMACNA, and NFPA codes
      • Experience with test and balancing of HVAC system and use of micromanometers for taking differential and static pressure and air velocity and flow readings
      • Working knowledge of mini split AC unit system design
      • Understanding and familiarity with HVAC drawings and drawing symbols
      • Working knowledge of chilled water systems and heat removal, air handler unit selection and Heat Load Calculations Job Information
