Idaho National Laboratory's (INL) Radiological Engineering group is seeking forward-thinking, professionals interested in exploring a career as a Radiological Engineer (RE)! The Radiological Engineer:

  • Provides radiological engineering oversight and guidance for the day-to-day activities regarding Radiation Protection implementation at the assigned facility in accordance with the requirements of 10 CFR 835, applicable DOE Orders, INL Radiological Control Manual, and associated INL Radiological Control procedures. RadCon program implementation and responsible for performance of facility air monitoring program, bioassay monitoring program and technical support with radiological monitoring instrumentation. Responsible for identifying program deficiencies, developing appropriate corrective actions, providing technical guidance for development of radiological control policies and procedures, reviewing new regulatory requirements for applicability, and reviewing research and operations projects and programs for compliance with radiological control requirements.
  • Is responsible for supporting the implementation and continuing improvement of the INL radiological control program. Responsible for performing radiological planning from conceptual phase to actual implementation with specific emphasis on radiological job hazards as identified through in-field walk-downs, drawing and document reviews, and meeting with associated researchers, planners, and maintenance and operations personnel. These efforts should include devising source reduction technique suggestions and their implementation, performing on-going work document reviews, writing ALARA Reviews, and generating Radiological Work Permits [RWPs]) that ensure proper engineering controls for airborne radioactivity, high levels of contamination and high radiation are properly utilized. When applicable, ensure, that facility design, documentation, and implementation conform to 10 CFR 835 Subpart K requirements.
  • Collaborates with the Radiological Controls Supervisor and related staff including time spent in the field performing walkdowns, observations, and mentoring to RadCon staff as well as time in field offices developing appropriate work controls.
  • Provides guidance and review of operations to assure implementation of proper radiological control practices. Identifies, evaluates, and selects options for program implementation within the framework of DOE and INL requirements.
  • Reviews and evaluates proposed radiological work activities. Develops Technical Work Documents, ALARA reviews, and Radiation Work Permits. Ensures that radiological controls are comprehensive and documented according to radiological procedures. The position requires the ability to work independently, with limited direction and guidance.   • Know and aligns with environmental, safety, health, radiation and contamination, and quality assurance regulations, policies, and procedures for this position. Ensures own safety and safety of coworkers. Reports unsafe work conditions to immediate manager. Ensures that the five core functions of the Integrated Safety Management System (ISMS) are understood and applied when performing job duties. Ensures that Laboratory excellence is achieved through appropriate implementation of conduct of operations. Participates in safety related processes and programs as defined by the Laboratory.
  • Is familiar with DOE ESH&QA/ISMS programs. Supports and uses the established ISMS principles to ensure work is conducted safely and meets the requirements for Safety, Health and Environmental requirements. Minimum Requirements:
    • Level 3 - Bachelors degree in engineering, science, or related field and 5 years related experience, or a Master's degree in engineering, science, or related field and at least 3 years related experience.
    • Level 4 - Bachelors degree in engineering, science, or related field plus 8 years related experience, or a Master's degree in engineering, science, or related field and at least 6 years' related experience.
    • Obtain and maintain INL Radiological Engineer qualification including MFC specific facility qualification for assigned areas of responsibility. Preferred Requirements:
