The Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking applicants for an entry level Mechanical Engineer reporting to the Nuclear Remote Systems Engineering Department Manager.
INL is recognized as the lead national laboratory for DOE-NE, providing much of the nuclear research, development, and demonstration capability needed to move nuclear innovation forward to deployment. MFC hosts a unique combination of personnel, facilities and infrastructure and offers the ability to perform research and development of nuclear fuels from fuel design, development and fabrication through post irradiation examination and analysis.
The Mechanical Engineer serves as a contributor in engineering design, development, installation and repair of specialized remotely operated equipment. Remotely operated equipment is equipment installed and operated in nuclear hot cells and serves a purpose to examine, manipulate or process irradiated materials and fuels.
Works with Department Manager, Project Managers, Principle Investigator's, and System Engineers on design projects or tasks (an entry level engineer performs this work with oversight from experienced staff).
Provides support to project participants in the development of new nuclear research-related programs and initiatives.
Works with sponsoring organizations to develop design requirements and with engineers from differing disciplines to propose, design and develop effective solutions in the form of electro-mechanical systems and equipment.
DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:
Identify technical requirements for the design and fabrication of electro-mechanical system and equipment for remote operation applications.
Develop specific design configurations to implement requirements.
Develop engineering evaluations, drawings, analyses and procedures to document design.
Identify corrective actions to restore failed or degraded equipment.
Must have technical writing and communications skills to produce engineering documentation such as, development test plans, design requirements and descriptions, installation and testing procedures, and preparation/presentation for the purpose of design review.
Work on electro-mechanical design problems with supervision from more experienced staff utilizing specialized techniques to provide solutions.
Works with others engineering disciplines to determine technical approach for solving problems and meeting client needs.
Maintains productive work assignments
Responsible for working within the approved safety envelopes.
Maintain expertise and INL specific technical staff qualifications.
Must be a US Citizen and be able to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy (DOE) "L" security clearance
Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering and 0-2 years of related experience or Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering and 1 year of related experience
Must be or become qualified to INL Tech Staff requirements
Must be or become Rad Worker 1 or 2 trained, as required
Experience with troubleshooting and repair of mechanical systems or equipment.
Experience with or desire to perform machine design.
Experience with development testing of electro-mechanical systems.
Experience with computerized design and drafting tools, specifically 3-D CAD software.
Experience with Finite Element Analysis.
Familiar with codes and standards.
Familiar with fabrication practices.
Familiar with Off the Shelf components and their capabilities.
