Changing the World's Energy Future by Breaking Ground on New Technology

MISSION: Discover, demonstrate and secure innovative nuclear energy solutions, other clean energy options and critical infrastructure.

VISION: INL will change the world's energy future and secure our critical infrastructure.

This position is open for an entry level materials scientist/Materials Engineer/Metallurgist at Ph.D level. INL has traditionally excelled in the research, development and characterization of materials that support multiple types of advanced energy generation, storage, efficiency and security. Currently the Materials Science and Engineering Department at INL is seeking an entry level candidate at Ph.D. level in the area of general alloy processing with expertise in thermomechanical processing (TMP), e.g., rolling, forging, heat treatment, etc., of titanium alloys.

You will be expected to extrapolate your past work on titanium alloys to other titanium alloys as well as to other alloy systems. The major focus of the position is to optimize thermomechanical processing of commercial as well as emerging alloys for high strain-rate applications. You should also be motivated to apply their TMP knowledge to other alloy systems, especially Fe-based, Ni-based, high entropy alloys, etc., in existing projects focused on other applications in extreme environments such as high temperature, high stress, high radiation environments and aggressive environments (e.g. molten salts, supercritical fluids and other corrosive atmospheres.

You will be expected to plan and carry out R&D under the direction of an INL mentor. You will prepare reports and manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals as well as make presentations. You will also provide input to proposals arising out of their work. In addition to traditional TMP methods, experience in the area of advanced manufacturing, especially utilizing titanium alloys, is also highly desirable. Candidates exhibiting the ability to integrate modeling and simulations into development of materials and advanced materials processing approaches will merit special consideration for this position.

You must also obtain and maintain a security clearance at the Q level.

Specific responsibilities include:

1) Serving as a major or sole contributor to the generation of reports, publications, and proposals and contribution to the generation of additional proposals and concepts submitted for external funding.

2) Conducting and documenting work at an appropriate quality level, including collection and interpretation of laboratory data, planning of research tasks, as well as assessing and applying a wide range of research techniques to those tasks.

3) Representing the MS&E Department and INL with sponsors and peers through programmatic and technical presentations.

Doctorate & 0 to 2 years experience.

Must be a US Citizen. Must have the ability to obtain and maintain Q-Level Clearance.

To be eligible for employment at INL males between ages 18 and 25 must register (or must have registered) with the Selective Service System (SSS). This includes U.S. born and naturalized citizens, parolees, undocumented immigrants, legal permanent residents, asylum seekers, refugees, and all males with visas of any kind which expired more than 30 days ago.
