The Spent Fuel Handling Recapitalization Project (SFHP) and Naval Examinations Acquisition Project (NEAP) is seeking engineers to perform technical work for a Department of Energy Major Construction Project. The focus of this project is to replace aging infrastructure for spent nuclear fuel handling and examinations for the United States Navy. The successful candidate will work with a team to review and apply applicable fire codes and standards, perform and document Fire Hazard Analyses, develop facility and facility system design requirements, and perform periodic in-field surveillance's while interfacing with facility stakeholders (site fire protection engineers, building code committee, oversight, etc.), an Architecture & Engineering firm to develop and refine design concepts, and a Construction Management firm to review construction specifications and codes. The SFHP Facility construction is underway and the NEAP Facility conceptual design and project planning work are in progress. The selected candidate will have the unique opportunity to be part of the team that will position the Naval Reactors program for continued success for the next 50+ years.

Day-to-day responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Review and develop facility designs requirements to ensure correct fire codes are being applied, develop a fire hazard analysis in conjunction with an Architecture & Engineering firm to support a facility baseline concept and cost estimate, develop facility and facility system design specifications to be given to a Design Agent to perform detailed facility design, evaluate facility design concepts to validate that requirements are being met, and perform periodic on-site surveillances of construction work. The nature of this work requires technical writing skills to document evaluations, results, assumptions, technical basis, and risks associated with the recommended course of action. The successful candidate will be required to work with a variety of subject matter experts to ensure project objectives are achieved, including facility engineers, project managers, line management, equipment designers, and operations technicians.

Essential duties of a Senior/Principal Engineer include:
Perform engineering evaluations and analyses, and make engineering decisions for all aspects of assigned tasks. Cognizant areas may include planning, designing, modeling, analyzing, documenting, and testing of nuclear, mechanical, structural or electrical components, systems and equipment and facilities. Work may include chemical or materials evaluations, design reviews, operations support, safety analysis, engineering methods and software development, and analysis of vendor's procedures and systems for quality control or manufacturing surveillance.

Job Requirements

Senior:

BS degree in engineering or Bachelor's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of six years relevant experience; or
MS degree in engineering or Master's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of four years relevant experience

Principal:

BS degree in engineering or Bachelor's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of nine years relevant experience; or
MS degree in engineering or Master's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of seven years relevant experience

Job Preferred Skills

Knowledgeable of fire protection systems and codes. Experience writing and/or reviewing Fire Hazard Analyses. Strong desire to perform work both safely and efficiently. Strong communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team. Attention to detail. Technical writing skills. Experience with facility or hot cell design, consulting, and/or construction. Fire Protection Engineering license or specific degree in fire protection.
