Description: Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking candidates for the INL Graduate Fellowship Appointment in the area of National and Homeland Security (N&HS). Appointments are awarded to Ph.D. students* with interest in one or more of the following N&HS primary research areas: - Advancing the fields of cyber-informed science and engineering with innovative research that solves the most complex cybersecurity challenges in control systems, energy systems and wireless systems.- Illuminating and mitigating risks from the convergence of cybersecurity with control systems, infrastructure systems, (particularly energy), and communications (particularly wireless). - Advancing security solutions that prevent, detect, and counter nuclear and radiological threats as applicable to new scientific discoveries and technology innovations applicable to nuclear forensics, safeguards and security informed nuclear fuel cycle technologies, and/or emergency response preparedness. - Enabling defense, intelligence and public safety organizations with next generation technologies as applicable to the science and engineering of next generation protective materials that survive and perform within the extreme environments of highly kinetic ballistic and blast events; for assuring communications within dynamically shared and contested radiofrequency environments; or sensing and characterizing physical phenomena during highly complex, in-field experiments and validation testing. Candidates must have exceptional educational capabilities and the potential for significant achievements in technical fields aligned with N&HS core capabilities listed below: --- Advanced Computer Science, Visualization and Data--- Applied Materials Science and Engineering--- Chemical and Molecular Science--- Chemical Engineering--- Physics and Materials Science--- Cyber and Information Sciences*--- Large-Scale User Facilities/Advanced Instrumentation--- Mechanical Design and Engineering--- Nuclear and Radio Chemistry--- Nuclear Engineering--- Power Systems and Electrical Engineering--- Systems Engineering and Electrical Engineering The INL Graduate Fellowship Program is designed to be a triad collaborative relationship between the student, their university thesis advisor, and an INL technical advisor. The selected students will receive mentoring support from both the university and INL while pursuing their Ph.D. The student will conduct their dissertation research at INL the last two years of their Ph.D. program. *Students who are pursuing a cyber security master's degree may be considered for the fellowship. Timeline: Application deadline is February 15, 2019Selections will be announced May, 2019 Minimum Qualifications At a minimum, candidates will:Be enrolled in Ph.D. program or applied to Ph.D. in a science or engineering discipline that is closely related to INL---s mission. (Note: Cyber security master's students may be considered)Have the support of their university during the required coursework portion of the Ph.D.Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5Candidate may need to acquire a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance depending upon the nature of the work to be performed. Such clearance may require U.S. Citizenship Status.
