Learn more about Nuclear Fuels and Materials Research (CLICK Links Below) Position Description The Fusion Technology Postdoctoral Research Associate will engage in the development and application of computer codes for the design and analysis of fusion energy systems. Our focus is on supporting technologies and components necessary for the viability of a nuclear fusion reactor, including tritium breeding blankets, divertors, shielding and cooling systems, balance of plant equipment, and safety systems. Work products are anticipated to be computer codes applicable to the analysis of fusion reactor systems; comparative analyses of fusion reactor designs; integrated designs of fusion reactor components and systems; safety analyses; new models developed based on experimental data; and design of experiments necessary to acquire such data. As a postdoc, the focus is on developing deep technical expertise essential to the success of complex collaborative analytical and experimental programs.
There are a several possible projects that require this skillset including contributing to:
* Integrated design and multiphysics analysis of fusion reactor components and ancillary systems;
* Development and application of thermal hydraulic and mass (tritium and activation product) transport codes;
* Development and application of computational fluid dynamic (CFD) and computational magnetohydrodynamic (CMHD) codes;
* Neutronic and activation analysis to support fusion reactor radionuclide inventory assessments;
* Safety assessments of fusion reactor designs, including tritium and radionuclide transport analysis in steady state, transient, and accident conditions.

Project selection will be based on candidate skillset and research interests with multiple positions available. Based on the nature of the projects, the candidate is expected to be a strong asset to our interdisciplinary R&D team that is capable of working effectively both independently and as part of a larger multifunctional team. The position includes writing scientific manuscripts for journal publication, and presentation of research results at national and international conferences and meetings. Qualifications Required: * Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or comparable discipline; must be completed by commencement of appointment and within the previous 5 years.
* Demonstrated oral and published written communication skills. Desired Skills * Familiarity with use of neutronic, fluid (thermal hydraulic or CFD), or structural analysis codes and their application to complex nuclear, chemical, or mechanical systems;
* Experience with computer programming languages such as C++ or FORTRAN;
* Development and implementation of constitutive models for material behavior or transport phenomena;
* Computer code assessment, validation and uncertainty quantification by comparing code results to experimental results;
* Familiarity with nuclear systems and nuclear safety principles is a plus;
* Past experience and familiarity with fusion energy systems is a plus;
