Responsibilities


The Nuclear Fuel Performance Postdoctoral Research Associate will focus on establishing fuel performance for a wide range of fuel systems to support fission and fusion development needs. Work products are anticipated to be developing or refining approaches for setting fuel system performance limits, establishing new methods for comparison of models to a wide range of post irradiation exam data, and supporting experiment design based on fuel performance modeling. As a postdoc, the focus is on developing deep technical expertise essential to the success of complex experimental programs.

There are a several possible projects that require this skillset including contributing to:

* design of accelerated irradiation testing experiments intended to enable rapid development of fuel performance models;

* methodologies to set fuel performance limits for a range of micro and advanced reactor applications based on application of historical data to new designs;

* design, analysis and sponsoring of irradiation testing experiments intended to probe the transient performance of nuclear fuel systems;

* developing capabilities to analyze tritium evolution and transport for both molten salt and fusion fuel cycles; and

* developing capabilities to model the transport of fission products in a range of fuel systems as part of ongoing fuel qualification programs.



Project selection will be based on candidate skillset and research interests with multiple positions available. Based on the nature of the projects, the candidate is expected to be a strong asset to our interdisciplinary R&D team that is capable of working effectively both independently and as part of a larger multifunctional team. The position includes writing scientific manuscripts for journal publication, and presentation of research results at national and international conferences and meetings.













Qualifications* Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or comparable discipline;must be completed by commencement of appointment and within the previous 5 years.

* Demonstrated oral and published written communication skills;

Desired Skills

* Familiarity with comparison of models to data, experience with post-irradiation examination data;

* Thermo-mechanical modeling applying finite element or other numerical methods;

* Development and implementation of constitutive models for material behavior (creep, swelling, diffusion, corrosion, ...);

* Computer code assessment, validation and uncertainty quantification by comparing code results to experimental results;

* Familiarity with performance of mixed oxide, metallic, and/or TRISO fuel systems, especially the distinguishing traits in comparison to other fuel types is a plus; and

* Familiarity with tritium management in molten salt or fusion fuel cycles is a plus.

Must be a US Citizen or a Legal Permanent Resident. This position is subject to export control restrictions per the Department of Energy. For this reason, you must be either a US Citizen or a US Green Card holder to qualify for the job. However, the DOE and INL will review and approve the selected candidate post offer acceptance.
