ORGANIZATION: Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) GRADE: 220/230 WORK LOCATION: Idaho Falls, ID (MFC Site 4x10s schedule) Does a career focused on changing the world's energy future intrigue you? The Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking applicants as a Nuclear Research Facility Process Engineer who will work closely with research staff supporting nuclear energy programmatic research. Senior level candidates are being sought in the following engineering disciplines Mechanical, Nuclear, Chemical, Electrical, and Instrumentation & Control's engineering. The positions will be organized within the Facility and Systems Engineering Department within the Engineering Division. INL is recognized as the lead national laboratory for DOE-NE, providing much of the nuclear research, development, and demonstration capability needed to move nuclear innovation forward to deployment. MFC hosts a unique combination of personnel, facilities and infrastructure and offers the ability to perform research and development of nuclear fuels from fuel design, development, and fabrication through post irradiation analysis. The successful candidate will be the assigned System Engineer for various process systems related to Electro-Metallurgical Treat of Spent Nuclear Fuels. MFC has outstanding nuclear facility capabilities that includes hot-cells where nuclear fuels are treated. These hot-cell environments provide unique and exciting challenges with respect to engineering efforts. The successful candidate will work closely with research staff supporting nuclear energy programmatic research. System (Process) Engineers working with researchers will apply knowledge, practices, and technique to develop designs for new or modified systems, processes, and specialized equipment through design and implementation phases for operations in these hot-cell facilities. In this role a senior level engineer will work independently with research staff applying engineering knowledge, practice, and techniques in support of assignments and be responsible to ensure continued operational readiness of assigned systems and equipment. Technical understanding of system design requirements, system performance criteria, physical configuration, operation, testing, and maintenance of assigned systems and components is key. Additionally, basic understanding of the science base behind processes will be required and taught. Responsibilities Include:
  • Perform System Engineering role for modifications to assigned systems and development of new system capabilities to meet operational and research needs
  • Perform Design Engineer role for modifications to support operational and research needs
  • Perform Task Lead role for modifications
  • Configuration Management of assigned systems
  • Specify equipment maintenance for assigned systems
  • Monitor performance of assigned systems
  • Failure analysis for assigned systems
  • Operations Support for assigned systems
Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in an applicable engineering discipline and 5-8 years relevant engineering experience, or a master's degree and 3-6 years relevant experience.
  • Applicable degrees include; Mechanical, Nuclear, Chemical, Electrical, and Instrumentation & Control's engineering.
  • Must be a US Citizen and have the ability and willingness to acquire and maintain a "DOE" security clearance.
  • Ability to design, analyze and evaluate systems
  • Ability to communicate with operations, engineering, nuclear safety, maintenance, and programmatic personnel both verbally and through written products
  • Ability to identify and execute engineering work tasks such as design efforts, maintenance activities and operating written instructions
  • Ability to plan, organize, and lead engineering work
Preferred Skills:
  • Experience performing system engineering functions within a nuclear facility/environment
  • Professional Engineering License
