Design, develop, test, analyze, and modify components of field stations (sensors and computer-based data loggers) to acquire continuous seismic data from distant locations and enable transmission into seismic data acquisition and analysis computers. Design, write, modify, and test computer system software used by computer-based seismic instrumentation, digital communications systems, and remote power sources. Conduct work with and at 35 seismic stations with short-period and broadband seismometers, 42 field and building locations with accelerometers, and 18 global positioning system (GPS) receivers co-located at seismic stations. Within the framework of a continuous seismic monitoring system, work independently or with limited oversight at remote field sites or within INL facilities to design, develop, test, analyze, and modify computer hardware and software that will enable continuous seismic signal transmissions from computer-based seismic instrumentation through programmable digital telemetry systems to integration into and configuration of seismic data acquisition and analysis computers. Consult with INL seismologists or analyze continuous seismic signals to determine seismic monitoring system functional requirements and implement innovative solutions to resolve problems or repair hardware and software of computer-based seismic instrumentation, communications equipment, power systems, and seismic data acquisition and analysis computers. Design, write, modify, and test computer system software (on LINUX operating systems) used by computer-based seismic instrumentation, digital communications systems (e.g., combinations of digital radios, DSL, and internet), remote power sources, and computers including but not limited to microcontroller devices, embedded LINUX operating systems, computer servers, EARTHWORM acquisition program, and SEISAN analysis program. Maintain proficiency and educate other staff on advances of hardware and software upgrades, changes, and replacements for computer-based seismic instrumentation, digital communication systems, remote power systems, and computer operating systems for the seismic data acquisition and analysis computers. Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE "L" Clearance. Preferred Requirements:
Individuals must have knowledge of or be willing to gain knowledge of seismic instrumentation fundamentals. Applicants must also have experience or skills in two or more of the following areas: data acquisition and analysis type software (EARTHWORM preferred); LINUX (or UNIX) operating systems; networking communications (such as TCP/IP); remote digital telemetry; integration of instrument signals with data acquisition systems; and 6) programming languages (e.g., fortran, C, perl, or others).
Individuals must have demonstrated proficiency with or strong willingness to perform work under varying and diverse environmental conditions including but not limited to: adverse weather (moderately cold and hot temperatures), driving on unimproved snowy mountain roads in an all-terrain vehicle or truck with trailer, and climbing antenna towers ( Preference is desired for individuals who have experience with seismic digital data loggers, broadband seismometers, accelerometers, or GPS instrumentation working under variable environmental conditions. Preference is desired for individuals who have experience with computer programming, seismic digital data loggers, broadband seismometers, accelerometers, or GPS instrumentation working under variable environmental conditions.
