Idaho National Laboratory's (INL)--Irradiation Experiment Analysis--department develops and maintains lab-wide, engineering-scale analytical capabilities and expertise specific to irradiation testing of nuclear fuels and materials in reactors and nuclear facilities at the INL. This organization is responsible for performing neutronics and thermal/fluids calculations and analyses enabling research, engineering design, fabrication, irradiation, shipping and post-irradiation examination (PIE) activities associated with nuclear fuels and material experiments.

The-- Irradiation Experiment Analysis--d epartment is seeking a Neutronics Analyst to contribute and function as a subject matter specialist on multi-disciplinary engineering project teams. This role provides nuclear engineering capability to support the design and investigation of irradiation experiments. Typically, these irradiation experiments are conducted in INL nuclear facilities such as the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR), the Transient Reactor Test (TREAT) Facility, or the Hot Fuel Examination Facility (HFEF).
Responsibilities

  • Perform calculations, create models, evaluate and analyze the entire life-cycle of irradiation experiments.
  • Utilize analytical tools (e.g. MCNP, SCALE, Mathcad, RELAP5, etc...) to achieve results and perform work using high performance computer (HPC) systems.
  • Apply scientific/engineering principles, theories and concepts to understand, explain and defend physical conditions and phenomena.
  • Apply analytical techniques and tools to evaluate, understand and explain nuclear interactions and behaviors.
  • Perform work with direction and oversight to ensure correctness, completeness and quality of results. Work will be performed to support established expectations, requirements, schedules, and budgets.
  • Contribute and function as a subject matter specialist on multi-disciplinary engineering project teams.
  • Ensure accuracy, quality and completeness of input parameters, assumptions, calculations, analyses, models, results and, deliverables.
  • Learn and apply established facility-specific requirements to support all aspects of the irradiation experiment life-cycle.
  • Innovate and make positive impacts to cost, schedule, and discovery within the area of analysis.

    Qualifications
  • Degree in Nuclear Engineering (or a closely related field) plus experience in the nuclear enterprise:
    o BS plus 2-5 years experience o MS plus 1-3 years experience
  • Experience using programming (e.g. Python, C++, FORTRAN) languages is preferred.
  • Eager and engaged participant with experience collaborating on multi-disciplinary engineering project teams and ability to work effectively both independently and as a highly sought team member.
  • Self-motivated and willing to take direction from management, team members, and peers as well as provide meaningful and constructive feedback to management, team members, and peers.
  • Experience maintaining currency in relevant engineering and scientific literature and methods, preparing internal and external reports, contributing to peer-reviewed publications, preparing presentations, and presenting work status with results at technical meetings.
  • Must be able to work in a culturally diverse environment.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy level "L" security clearance is required; therefore, US citizenship is required.
