Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a R&D scientist/engineer
for the Energy Storage and Advanced Transportation Department to
help enable the next generation of transportation. The
transportation sector is on the verge of dramatic change. Rapid
technology development and evolving consumer preferences are
enabling market penetration of connected, electric vehicles that
can charge at high rates and the development of automated vehicles.
Proliferation of these technologies has the potential to
significantly alter how people travel, how goods are shipped, and
how the transportation sector consumes energy.
In this role, you will be an integral member of a small team
developing and integrating analytical methods and software that
simultaneously simulates electric vehicles, charging
infrastructure, and the electric grid. You will develop a set of
tools on both Linux and Windows platforms that accurately model how
electric vehicles behave as loads on the grid and how those loads
can be shaped using smart charging control strategies. To enable
this development, you will need strong skills in programming, as
well as experience in advanced analytics methods, including machine
learning. Prior experience developing transportation-related
software tools is beneficial.
In this position, you will facilitate change as a researcher who
can perform complex data analysis to inform on current and future
electric vehicle use patterns. Your research will benefit private
industry and help accomplish the goals of the U.S. Department of
Energy's Vehicle Technologies Office to expand U.S. energy
security, economic vitality, and quality of life by advancing
state-of-the-art transportation solutions.
Tasks will be primarily focused on the interactions that occur as
electric vehicles evolve to include higher-power charging, longer
range, and increased use in fleets or shared mobility. Experience
with data-driven modeling and machine learning to increase
understanding of complex systems is a key requirement for this
position. To be successful in this position, you will also need to
have strong communication skills and the ability to effectively
work on a small, cross-functional team. You will be expected to
regularly provide written and verbal progress updates to project
principal investigators and INL management.
Masters degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or other
engineering or scientific field.
Demonstrated proficiency programming in Python and C , using
object-oriented programming concepts and design patterns
Experience with machine learning or other forms of artificial
IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL MEET THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:
Experience developing and integrating software on Windows and Linux
Experience using OpenMPI Experience working at or with firms
developing software for use in the automotive, transportation, or
electric utility sectors.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS AND/OR TRAINING:
Must be comfortable working as a member of a small team, with roles
as both a technical contributor and the ability to grow into a
task- or project lead. Candidate should be able and willing to grow
into the capacity of working with limited direct or immediate
supervision. Candidate should be able to contribute to the
development of project- and/or task-specific scope, schedule, and
cost planning estimates. Must be able to incorporate evolving
technologies, toolsets, and methodologies into the teams work
processes and products
