The Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking an Operations Staff Specialist responsible to lead and independently complete a variety of tasks and assignments within the Waste Management Integration and Transport Operations organization. Such tasks and assignments will support research programs and facilities across MFC and other INL-wide operational areas. In this role, the Staff Specialist must demonstrate the ability to work independently and with initiative in seeking assignments with a strong bias for action in leading and completing tasks in areas which include, but are not limited to: establishing policies and procedures related to transfers and transport operations, cask management, work management coordination/personnel, safety basis implementation, and supporting development of a certified transuranic (TRU) waste program at MFC. This position reports directly to the Waste Management Integration and Transport Operations Nuclear Facility Manager in the Production Facilities Division.

INL is recognized as the lead national laboratory for DOE-NE, providing much of the nuclear research, development, and demonstration capability needed to move nuclear innovation forward to deployment. MFC hosts a unique combination of personnel, facilities and infrastructure and offers the ability to perform research and development of nuclear fuels from fuel design, development and fabrication through post irradiation analysis.

In support of the MFC and INL mission, this position will serve as a key point of contact and SME where a high degree of technical knowledge in transport operations, nuclear safety requirements, and operational experience is required. Staff Specialists are responsible to lead a variety of projects and will interface with other organizations, senior levels of management, and will lead in coordinating and managing the activities of other staff. Responsible to provide a variety of OJT for new operators or other facility personnel, to perform Criticality Safety Officer (CSO) functions for assigned areas, and to maintain various staff qualifications and perform responsibilities as assigned. Knowledge of MFC waste generation/issues and radiological material transfers is required.


Must be a US Citizen and be able to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy (DOE) "L" Security Clearance

Bachelor's Degree and 2-5 years of relevant work experience or Master's Degree and 1-3 years of relevant work experience. Relevant experience includes waste management and/or environmental compliance, transport operations, and nuclear safety. Preferred degree disciplines include Engineering or a related technical field

Must be able to effectively manage multiple tasks and deal with changing priorities without appreciable direction


Working knowledge of waste management requirements of DOE Order 435.1

Excellent interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills

Strong working knowledge in nuclear safety requirements (DOE O 460.1, DOE-STD-1027-92, and 10 CFR 830)
